The course builds on previous supervised professional training studies and theoretical courses. The student shall gain competence in systematically observing, assessing, deciding on, implementing and documenting appropriate nursing measures regarding the patient group. The student shall further develop their skills in communication, interaction and reflection on ethical issues.

The course will be completed either at a medical or a surgical ward.

All courses passed in the first academic year and SYK1010 Communication, Psychology, Pedagogy and Sociology, PRA1026 Supervised professional training studies - Basic Nursing, Municipal Health Service and SYK2010 Practical Nursing Skills, Part 2.

PRA2035 Supervised professional training studies - People with acute, critical and chronic illnesses, Part 1, Specialist health service must be passed in order to start PRA2036 Supervised professional training studies - People with acute, critical and chronic illnesses, Part 2, Specialist health service.

In the event that a pass grade has not been achieved for the period of supervised professional training, the period of supervised professional training must be repeated before the student is able to proceed to other periods of supervised professional training.

Knowledge

  • have broad knowledge of people-centred nursing
  • have knowledge of the most common diseases, symptoms, clinical pathways, assessments and treatments
  • have knowledge of preoperative, perioperative and postoperative nursing (applies to the surgical ward)
  • have knowledge of pharmacology and the most common medications used at the place of supervised professional training
  • have knowledge of the nurse’s area of responsibility and role in the specialist health service

Skills

  • can apply professional knowledge of illness and health in order to systematically observe, assess, decide on, implement, document and evaluate appropriate nursing measures
  • can communicate in a professional manner towards patients, relatives, colleagues and other partners
  • can administer medications in a professionally responsible manner
  • can carry out the most common procedures in the department and can manage infection control measures, technical/medical equipment, documentation, technology and digital solutions
  • can reflect on ethical and legal issues, as well as adjusting one’s own practice when performing duties

General competence

  • can demonstrate accountability, commitment and independence in accordance with professional ethical guidelines in respect of patients, relatives, employees and other partners
  • can administer nursing care to patients with acute, critical and chronic illness, participate in doctor’s visits and make reports
  • can plan and carry out professional communication and interaction with patients and relatives based on respect, co-determination and integrity
  • can reflect on their own professional development and shows a willingness and commitment to develop their own nursing competence under supervision

In addition to semester fees and literature on the reading list, costs must be expected regarding additional housing, travel expenses etc. related to supervised professional training, cf. Nord University’s guidelines.

Compulsory. Supervised professional training study

The practice of clinical nursing during supervised professional training under the supervision of nurses who are familiar with the learning outcomes of the course.

The student will perform tasks relating to the subject area during the supervised professional training studies.

The student will complete a self-assessment in respect of their own achievement of the learning outcomes.

Eight weeks of supervised professional training studies within the specialist health service, surgical or medical ward.

SPT - Examination: The student will practice the profession of nursing and their achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed throughout the process. In the event that there is a risk that the student will not pass, the student must be notified in writing at the time of the interim assessment or at least three weeks before the final assessment is due to take place, any shortcomings must be specified and documented and the student must be given the opportunity to work on these up until the final assessment.

An accurate assessment can be ensured through collaboration between the placement supervisor and the lecturer based on clear learning outcomes for which the student will also have the opportunity to assess themselves.

The following requirements must be met in order to pass the period of supervised professional training:

90% attendance during supervised professional training Achievement of learning outcomes

Approved written, practical and/or oral assignments

Grading scale: Pass/fail

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:
