Clinical Practice: Patients with Acute, Critical or Chronic Diseases part 2: Specialist Health Care Services

This course builds on previous theory courses and supervised professional training studies. The student shall gain competence in systematically observing, assessing, deciding on, implementing and documenting appropriate nursing measures regarding the patient group. The student will further develop their skills in communication, interaction and reflection on ethical issues and develop their ability to see connections and understand complex and complicated patient conditions and clinical pictures.

If the supervised professional training course PRA2035 was completed at a medical ward, PRA2036 must be completed at a surgical ward and vice versa.

PRA2035 Supervised professional training studies - People with acute, critical and chronic illnesses, Part 1, Specialist health service.

In the event that a pass grade has not been achieved for the period of supervised professional training, the period of supervised professional training must be repeated before the student is able to proceed to other periods of supervised professional training.

The course must have been passed before the start of the eighth semester

Knowledge

  • have broad knowledge of people-centred nursing
  • have broad knowledge of quality and patient safety when levels of care change
  • have knowledge of the most common diseases, symptoms, clinical pathways, assessments and treatments and be able to update their knowledge when dealing with patients with complex clinical pictures
  • have knowledge of preoperative, perioperative and postoperative nursing (applies to the surgical ward)
  • have knowledge of the most common drugs used at the place of supervised professional training
  • have knowledge of one’s own professional health role and the professional health roles of others in the health and welfare system

Skills

  • can apply professional knowledge of illness, health and complex and complicated patient conditions and clinical pictures in order to systematically observe, assess, decide on, implement, document and evaluate appropriate nursing measures
  • can communicate in a professional manner towards patients, relatives, colleagues and other partners

  • can carry out the most common procedures in the department
  • can master relevant medical/technical equipment
  • have knowledge of technology and digital solutions in the health service
  • can reflect on and deal with ethical issues, as well as adjusting one’s own practice when performing duties
  • can gather knowledge of complex and complicated clinical pictures in relevant patient situations
  • can make independent assessments and interventions in relation to complicated and complex patient situations

General skills

  • can demonstrate responsibility, commitment and independence and adhere to professional ethical guidelines in respect of patients, relatives and employees
  • can demonstrate progression regarding the independent administration of nursing care to a group of patients, participate in doctor’s visits and make reports
  • can plan and carry out communication and interaction with patients and relatives based on respect, co-determination and integrity. Can initiate and contribute to interdisciplinary, interprofessional and interdepartmental collaboration
  • can reflect on one’s own professional development, receive guidance and adjust one’s own practice
  • can plan and implement targeted measures that ensure the safe transfer of patients between different units and levels in the health service
In addition to costs for semester fees and required reading, additional housing costs must also be expected, travel expenses, etc. in connection with supervised professional training, cf. the Nord University guidelines.
Compulsory. Supervised professional training study

Practice the nursing profession during supervised professional training under the supervision of nurses who are familiar with the learning outcomes of the course and who will assess the student’s achievement of these.

The student will perform tasks relating to the subject area during the supervised professional training studies.

The student will complete a self-assessment in respect of their own achievement of the learning outcomes.

8 weeks of supervised professional training in the specialist health service.

SPT - Examination: The student will practice the profession of nursing and their achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed throughout the process. In the event that there is a risk that the student will not pass, the student must be notified in writing at the time of the interim assessment or at least three weeks before the final assessment is due to take place, any shortcomings must be specified and documented and the student must be given the opportunity to work on these up until the final assessment.

An accurate assessment can be ensured through collaboration between the placement supervisor and the lecturer based on clear learning outcomes for which the student will also have the opportunity to assess themselves.

The following requirements must be met in order to pass the period of supervised professional training: 90% attendance during the supervised professional training
