Approaches to Mental Health Work

PSH7001
The course aims to convey in-depth knowledge of and the ability to perform practical mental health work. The course emphasizes key methods and approaches to mental health work.
The course cannot be taken as an independent course, including as part of further education in mental health work.

Students must have, as a minimum, a passing grade in the following courses: Introduction to Scientific Thinking and Research Work in the Health Sciences, 10 credits.

Perspectives in Mental Health Work, 10 credits.

Communication, collaboration and relationship, 10 credits.

in addition to passing the elective course, 10 credits, to be eligible to sit for the exam.

Knowledge

The student:

  • has in-depth knowledge of theories, methods, users' experiences, as well as research and can justify and evaluate the choice of approach
  • has in-depth knowledge and understanding of alternative action forms based on the needs of the user
  • has in-depth knowledge of how factors such as power, culture, organization affect opportunities for coping and improvement

Skills

The student:

  • is able to analyse actual situations from different perspectives, including the user¿s perspective and the societal perspective
  • is able to use their skills so that the user/patient can take advantage of their own resources and experience the ability to cope
  • is able to use various methodological approaches and reflect on their own practice
  • is able to organise and implement health-enhancing, preventive and rehabilitative mental health and substance dependency work

General competence

The student:

  • is able to analyse and communicate relevant professional and research-related ethical issues to members of the field, the research community and the general public
  • is able to communicate about ethical issues with specialists and to the public
  • is able to contribute to innovative thinking and innovation processes in the field of mental health and substance dependency work
Semester registration fee and course literature. Travel expenses to practice location.
Compulsory part of further education in mental health work, may be included as an elective course in the Master of Health Science. Not offered as an independent course
Lecture, seminar, group work, skills training, project work, practice and mentoring.
The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). The evaluations are part of the university's quality assurance system.
Practical training 5 weeks

The course includes the following types of examinations: individual assignment, individual coursework, supervised professional trainingand compulsory participation in assessment. Coursework and compulsory participation must be approved before a final course grade can be given.

  • Individual assignment - represents 100% of the grade - Grading A-F
  • Individual coursework
  • The following applies to compulsory participation:

    • 80% attendance during academic supervision is required
    • Where attendance is between 60% and 80%, a compensatory task will be given.
