Motivational Interviewing 1

PSH7003
The course will provide advanced knowledge about Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a purposeful, client-oriented conversational method for motivating behavioural change and assisting in change processes. The course presents the following topics: the Motivational Interviewing (MI) method, various communication skills used in MI, theoretical models for analysing, understanding and influencing change processes, ProChaska and DiClemente’s ‘Stages of Change’ model.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Knowledge

The student

  • has advanced knowledge of theoretical background and research-based evidence that exists demonstrating that MI is effective in the encounter with patients/users/clients in different assistance relationships

Skills

The student

  • is able to use the MI technique in practical work with patients/users/clients
  • is able to adapt the use of a conversational tool to specific purposes such as mapping, change, or support conversations.
  • is able to use MI in various professional contexts and recognize situations where MI can be used

General competence:

The student

  • can apply knowledge about MI in order to adapt the methodology to various patient/user/client groups and in combination with other treatment methods
No fees other than semester fees and course literature.

Elective course

Offered as independent course.

Since MI is a practical method of work, the sessions are carried out as a combination of lectures,

observational opportunities and practical exercises with feedback from the lecturer. This requires that students are present at the sessions.

Coursework must be approved in order to take the examination.

The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.

The following applies to Compulsory participation:

There is a requirement for 80% attendance at meetings

Where attendance is between 60% and 80%, a compensatory task will be given.

Both Compulsory participation and Work requirements must be passed before the final grade in the course.

Exam answers can be submitted either in Scandinavian languages or in English.
