Perspectives in Mental Health Work

PSH7004
The course describes and deals with the history, development and understanding of mental problems and mental health work. This applies to individual, group and societal levels. The course focuses on how mental problems are experienced and the consequences they can have for individuals in their everyday life. The concept of mental health work involves a focus on how people with mental health challenges cope with their everyday life. The organisation of services is included.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in health or social sciences

Knowledge

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge about how biological, psychological, behavioural, social and societal conditions affect mental health
  • has advanced knowledge about the characteristics, development, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of mental disorders, as well as health-promoting mental health work
  • has good knowledge about the provision of services within mental health work and substance abuse treatment
  • can innovatively apply knowledge about mental health work within the fields of professional development and research

Skills

The student

  • can analyse and relate critically to existing theories, methodologies and professional issues in mental health work and use them to formulate academic reasoning
  • can use and explain the choice of relevant approaches for professional development within mental health work in an independent manner
  • can integrate knowledge and apply it in various practice contexts

General competence

The student

  • can analyse professional issues related to mental health work based on the discipline’s scientific traditions, distinctive character and place in society
  • can use knowledge about mental health work to develop existing and new competence
  • can explain the choice of action and theoretical framework within mental health work

Compulsory part of Mental Health Work specialisation in the Master of Health Sciences, and in Further Education in Mental Health Work (60 credits)

The programme of study is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). The evaluations are part of the university's quality assurance system.

The examination on this course consists of

  • Group coursework. The coursework must be passed before the final course grade can be given.
  • Home examination in groups - 2 weeks. Represents 100 % of the grade. Grading A-F
