Public Sector Accounting and Accounting Theory
REG2002
The course provides insight into the similarities and differences between municipal accounts and government accounts (including in relation to principles, financial statements, accounting and closing dates), with certain comparisons up against accounting models in the private sector. Accounting Theory connects to the various accounting solutions in the public sector to show how different theories are practiced and the tension between theory and practice.
Knowledge After completing the course the candidate should:
- know the requirements, objectives and characteristics of accounting and related financial management areas in the public sector
- have knowledge of the processes that underlie the budget work in the public sector.
- have knowledge of what characterizes state and municipal reporting (including reporting systems)
- have knowledge of accounting principles in public accounting and budgeting models
Skills
After completing the course the candidate should:
- be able to apply accounting principles and rules that apply to different areas of the public sector, including making corresponding accounting calculations, postings and analyzes, as well as be able to prepare various reports
- be able to apply academic knowledge to practical and theoretical issues
General competence
After completing the course the candidate should have:
- basic understanding of fundamental considerations that underlie public accounting models and associated conditions
- knowledge of the importance of public accounting by setting new standards across the private sector and individuals
- trained their ability to critically evaluate theories' applicability to practical issues and know the challenges associated with tension between theory and practice.
- experience with working in groups and to give an oral presentation of their own work
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Compulsory
Lecture, full-time and group work with cases.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.
