History, Politics and Northern Resources

SA218S
This course focuses on the historical development, management of resources and current challenges of the north, especially regarding Northern Norway, Spitsbergen and The Barents Region.
This course focuses on the historical development of the north, especially on Northern Norway, Spitsbergen and The Barents Region. Also former and present challenges in the international relations of the region, international cooperation and organizations and regimes such as The Arctic Council, Barents Euro-Artic Region (BEAR) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) are thoroughly addressed. The course also specifically addresses the fisheries, oil & gas activities, the environmental challenges, and the security policy issues in the High North.
Admission occurs based on general study competence (university entrance) according to current Norwegian regulations.

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of important topics and issues related to the history, politics and resources of the Barents region of the Arctic
  • is familiar with selected research and development work in the Barents region
  • can update his/her knowledge about history, politics and northern resources
  • has knowledge of the region’s history, nature and societies

Skills

The student

  • can apply academic knowledge to practical and theoretical problems and explain his/her choices
  • can reflect on his/her own academic practice and adjust it under supervision
  • can find, assess and refer to information and academic material and relate it to High North issues
  • masters relevant basic academic writing techniques and styles

General Competence

The student

  • has insight into relevant issues relating to history, politics and resources in the Barents region
  • can present academic material such as theories and dilemmas regarding history, politics and northern resources
  • can exchange opinions with others regarding history, politics and northern resources and participate in discussions concerning the development of good practice
  • is familiar with new ideas and developments in studies of history, politics and northern resources
In addition to the semester fee and required course literature, students are expected to have access to a laptop computer.
Compulsory for one year programme in the Arctic and Nordic Studies. Elective course for other students at Nord University.

On campus students: In-person lectures, student-centered class discussions, seminar-based sessions, and screenings of documentary films

Online students: Synchronous online lectures and student-centered class discussions

Annual evaluations which are included in the university´s quality assurance system.

Compound assessment (SV), grading A - F:

Course work (AK):

Written assignments (answers to 4 module questions).

Grading: approved/not approved.

Oral Exam (MU):

The exam consists of an oral examination.

Grading: A-F.

The oral exam accounts for 100/100 of the final exam grade.

Course work an exam will be conducted in English, and must be answered in English.

The written assignments are preliminary examinations and have to be successfully completed, together with the oral exam.

Passing both AK and MU is required to successfully complete the course.

No additional/external help is allowed.

Generating a response using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as your own work is considered cheating.
