Social Studies 1
SAM1012 covers a broad range of social studies topics and social studies didactical methods, focusing mainly on local and national conditions in Norway.
SAM1012 and SAM1013 together comprise a full year unit in social studies.
SAM1012 enables you to teach both in Norwegian schools and other learning institutions.
KNOWLEDGE
The student
- has subject knowledge about social studies, social studies in the Norwegian curriculum, and social studies didactics
- has knowledge about important terminology, theories and methods within social studies
- has knowledge about growing up in Norwegian society, in a social economic and technological perspective
- has knowledge about the Norwegian political system, and is able to apply this in education for democracy
- knows of important issues regarding human rights, citizenship and democracy, and knows of central didactic principles of education for democracy
- has knowledge about natural and cultural landscapes, and how landscapes are affected both by natural and societal processes
- has knowledge about a selection of historic periods in Norway
- has knowledge about recent Norwegian history, in particular the emergence of modern Norwegian society
- has knowledge about climate and environmental issues.
- has kowledge about the history and living conditions of indigenous people and national minorities in Norway, emphasising the Sámi
- knows of common perspectives on multicultural and anti-racist education.
SKILLS
The student
- is able to apply professional and didactic knowledge and skills in social science education
- is able to work with societal values and attitudes in social studies in education
- is able to use and evaluate critically digital tools and sources in teaching
- is able to work with different sources, in different arenas and with different methods to make social studies teaching exploratory
- is able to facilitate education about social issues in a multicultural and global perspective, emphasising human rights and democratic principles
- can evaluate critically their own teaching in accordance with social studies didactic principles
GENERAL COMPETANCE
The student
- is able to reflect critically about social studies questions, and stimulate critical thinking
- is able to work independently and in cooperation with others to identify, analyse and solve problems related to the pupils' learning and development in social studies
This course is digital, and requires digital attendance and participation throughout the academic year. Active participation and dialogue is necessary to achieve the learning outcomes of the course. This includes the work assignments (AK).
In addition to digital participation, there will be voluntary excursions, visits to institutions, and practical work.
There are four work assignments (AK) during the semester.
Work requirements (AK)
Four assignments will be given as work requirements during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved / not approved.
All AK must be approved before the student can receive a final grade in the course
Composite assessment (SV)
The final grade in the course is composed of two exam components:
Semester assignment (OP / O)
Individual semester assignment. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 40 percent of final grade.
Oral (MU / M)
Individual oral exam, conducted digitally. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 60 percent of final grade.
Both exam components must be passed to get a final grade in the course.
Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:

SAM2001 - Social Science 2A, 5-10 - 7.5 credits
SAM1007 - Social Studies 1, 5-10 - 15 credits

SAM1015 - Social studies in today's education - 7.5 credits
SAM1016 - Identity, community and participation - 15 credits
