Social studies in today's education

SAM1015
What does a social studies teacher need to know, and what do they need to be able to do? This course gives an introduction to social studies as a school topic.
This course provides an introduction to selected topics that are particularly relevant to today's social studies teachers. You will gain knowledge about the role of social studies in Norwegian education, and examine the current social studies curriculum. This course homes in on two central topics which are relevant for all years of primary education, and shows the breadth of what a social studies teacher does: indigenous perspectives and digital competence.
The program is open to anyone who has general study competence.

KNOWLEDGE

The student

  • has subject knowledge about content and methods in social studies, and the role of social studies in today's education
  • knows the contents of the social studies curriculum, and knows its function and how it has developed.
  • has subject knowledge about Norwegianization policies and important theoretical terms and perspectives concerning minority and indigeniety.
  • Knows of some ways of facilitating learning in social studies through aesthetics .
  • has subject knowledge about the role of media in society and recent developments, including false and real information, as well as consequences for democracy.

SKILLS

The student

  • is able to discuss the consequences of new technology such as artificial intelligence in society and in education.
  • is able to retrieve valid knowledge and educational resources for teaching about Sami and indegenous issues, which is suitable for their own local community.
  • is able to reflect about their own teaching practice through applying indigenous perspectives.

GENERAL COMPETANCE

The student

  • is able to utilize research-based knowledge and theoretical terminology from the course in a reflecting manner.
  • is able to exchange views and share experiences with others, thereby contributing to developing one's own and others' teaching practices.
  • is able to find and critically evaluate different educational resources about social studies topics.
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply. Students must have access to adequate technical equipment.
Elective

This course is digital, and requires digital attendance and participation throughout the academic year. Active participation and dialogue is necessary to achieve the learning outcomes of the course. This includes the work assignments (AK).

In addition to digital participation, there will be voluntary excursions, visits to institutions, and practical work.

There are three work assignments (AK) during the semester.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
There is no practice in schools related to the study.

Composite assessment (SV)

The final grade in the course is composed of two exam components:

  • Work requirements (AK): Three assignments will be given as work requirements during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved/not approved.
  • Home exam (HJ): Individual written exam. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 100 percent of final grade.

All AK must be approved before the student can receive a final grade in the course

All aids permitted.

Exception:

Generating text using Chat-GTP or other artificial intelligence and submitting it as one's own work, partly or fully, will be counted as cheating.

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:

SAM1021 - Social Studies 1A - Social Studies as a School Subject, 5-10 - 7.5 credits

SAM2003 - Social Studies 2A - Sámi and indigenous perspectives in social studies - 7.5 credits
