Norwegian and international history

SAM1017
The course deals with recent Norwegian and international history and how this topic can be used in the school's social studies teaching. The subject deals with the development of modern Norway from around 1800 to the present day. It will thematise social, economic and political change processes with particular focus on how these have contributed to shaping democratic development in the period. Furthermore, the subject deals with key events, developments and phenomena in international history from the 20th century to the present day. It has a particular focus on war and conflicts, and how this challenges democracy and human rights. The subject also addresses how international conflicts and globalization affect Norway. The subject should contribute to developing historical awareness, historical empathy and understanding of historical change.
The course is part of a full year unit in social studies which provides teaching competence in primary school and in other types of school, provided that you have completed teacher training in accordance with current regulations.
The program is open to anyone who has general study competence.

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of the rise of modern Norway from the 19th century both nationally and locally, with particular knowledge of the democratic development in this period
  • has knowledge of key wars and international conflicts in the 20th century and up to the present day
  • have knowledge of how war, conflict and genocide have challenged democracy and human rights
  • have knowledge of how central international trends and actors have influenced Norway.
  • has knowledge of history didactics and historical concepts, theory and methods and central didactic challenges related to teaching about this topic.

Skills

The student

  • can apply knowledge of the subject matter in independent analysis
  • can connect the topic of the course with the school's democracy training
  • can use and critically assess different types of sources, learning resources and didactic methods to stimulate students' awareness of history and understanding of historical change linked to the subject's subject matter
  • can reflect on key didactic challenges and opportunities linked to teaching about the subject's subject matter
  • can work with values and attitudes in the school's social studies to promote critical reflection and action skills in the students

General competence

The student

  • can read and analyze specialist literature
  • can use sources in a scientific way
  • can reflect critically and independently on key sociological and didactic questions within the subject
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply. Students must have access to adequate technical equipment.
Elective.
The course is web-based with asynchronous and synchronous teaching sessions, and requires active digital participation throughout the semester. Active participation and dialogue are necessary to be able to achieve the course's learning outcomes.  This includes the work assignments (AK). Three work requirements (AK) will be given during the semester.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
There is no practice in schools related to the study.

Composite assessment (SV)

The final grade in the course is composed of two exam components: 

  • Work requirements (AK)

Three assignments will be given as work requirements during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved / not approved. 

  • Oral examination (MU)

Individual oral examination. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 100 percent of final grade.

All AK must be approved before the student can receive a final grade in the course.

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:

SAM1023 - Social Studies 1C - The emergence of modern Norway - 7.5 credits

SAM2002 - Social Science 2B, 5-10 - 15 credits
