This course offers an introduction to sociology through the Norwegian context.
This course offers an introduction to sociology through the Norwegian context. Students will receive an introduction to sociological theories on how to understand modern societies and will learn about the dynamics of core social institutions, such as family, education, religion, and work among others, as well as the cultural values of Norwegian society.
Must have been admitted into the Norwegian Language and Society-program. Other international and exchange students can be assessed on request.
The course is not intended for students who have been admitted on the basis of the Norwegian general study competence or work competence.
General study competence
Knowledge and understanding
The student will learn about:
- Sociological theories that help understanding modern societies and social relations
- Social institutions and their role in Norway
- Norwegian cultural values
Skills
The student will be able to:
- Conduct a basic sociological analysis of modern societies
- Conduct a basic analysis of cultural impacts in social relations
- Participate in public discussions regarding the Norwegian society in a significant way
General competence
The student will:
- Get an understanding of core social institutions and their role in the Norwegian context
- Acquire an understanding of how Norwegian society is structured
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature
Compulsory for the one year program Norwegian language and Society. For other students elective
Lectures and seminars
Annual evaluations which are included in the university's quality assurance system
An individual 1 week (8-10 pages) home exam. The Exam can be written in either Norwegian, English, Swedish, or Danish
All aids allowed.
