The course gives a brief overview on some vital social institutions in Norway, and their functioning with regard to the principles of a welfare state. 
The course gives a brief overview on some vital social institutions in Norway, and their functioning with regard to the principles of a welfare state. The focus will be on the notions of equality, secularism and Norwegian identity. Lectures include an introduction to sociological theories on how to understand modern societies and a brief presentation of dynamics of the core social institutions: Family, Education, Religion, Work, Culture, and Politics.

Must have been admitted into the Norwegian Language and Society-program. Other international and exchange students can be assessed on request.

The course is not intended for students who have been admitted on the basis of the Norwegian general study competence or work competence.

Compulsory for the one year program Norwegian language and Society. For other students elective

Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.

Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3

To accommodate this, the form of assessment will be changed from Written school examination to Take – home examination on this course in the spring of 2020.
