Nature and Culture in a Sociologic Perspective

The topics we focus on concern questions about what we understand by nature; we approach theoretical perspectives that dominate and inspire sociological analyses of nature, biology, technology and body.
What is nature, what is a human body, a technology or a scientific fact? and what is biomedical disease? What are nature's conditions for social life? Which role does biology play in explanations of human behaviour and forms of life? What is nature's place in sociological theory? How can we describe and analyze the interaction between nature, culture, and social conditions be described and analysed? These questions are central in this course. Upon succesful completion of the course, tha students has acquired the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge of main sociological perspectives that are relevant to understand the relationship between nature and culture.
  • has knowledge of important themes in the intersection between nature and culture, such as; body, sexuality, gender, health and illness 

Skills

  • can reflect upon and analyze sociological questions such as; what is nature, what is a human body, how do body and other forms of nature constitute the conditions and limitations for our forms of life, and how may the interaction between biological, social and cultural conditions be understood?

General competence

  • has insight into different sociological perspectives that are relevant for understanding the relationship between nature and culture
  • is able to reflect analytically about problems and questions relevant to the field
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop.
Compulsory for the bachelor programme in sociology
Lectures and seminars
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are part of the University's quality assurance system.

Required coursework - oral presentation.

Written school exam, 6 hours.
