The course addresses major social and societal changes and challenges in our time, illuminating these as both as global and local phenomena and processes. The subject is associated with sociology and uses key sociological concepts and theories.

Basic requirement for university admission.

After completing the course, the student has obtained the following learning outcomes

Knowledge:

  • has knowledge of key topics and issues in the field of sociology,
  • has an understanding of key development features in global, international and Norwegian social conditions
  • has knowledge of sociological concepts and terminology regarding societal change and challenges

Skills:

  • can account for key challenges of modern society
  • can account for social features in a historical light and in relation to each other

General competence:

  • has a general understanding of society and ability for critical reflection
  • can describe and analyze global and local social conditions
  • can convey general sociological knowledge and illustrate global and local consequences of changes
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop
Compulsory for the bachelor programme and one year program in sociology. For other programmes elective.
Lectures, seminars, communication via Canvas (Learning Management System)
The programme is evaluated annually by the students through course surveys (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). The evaluations are part of the university's quality assurance system.
Written school examination, 6 hours, grading scale A-E for pass, F for fail
Pen, ruler, laptop, and up to 2 bilingual dictionaries
