Practicing Sociology

SOS1006
Practical Sociology gives students insight into how we can use sociological theory to understand social areas, and how we can use sociology as a basis for participation in the public discourse.
The aim of Practical Sociology is to acquire and analyse a sociological monograph. Furthermore, the students will familiarise themselves with, and work practically with, sociological communication within the framework of public sociology. The monograph analysis provides an introduction to the analysis of major sociological works, and practical work with this in the form of discussion, presentation and own text production. Regarding the part of the course that deals with public sociology, emphasis is placed on both written (for example in chronicles, blog posts, etc.) and oral (academic presentation of a relevant topic investigated in a sociological perspective) communication in groups, preferably with the use of digital platforms. Public sociology must also make students aware of communication to different recipients, and the possible roles of sociologists in public debate. The course places such emphasis on two important elements in sociological practice: review and analysis of an extensive empirical work (monograph), and academically based public communication (dissemination).
