Bachelor's Thesis in Sociology and Social Science Analysis

In the work on the bachelor thesis, the student will take as a starting point a chosen problem, and work his way through the phases of the research process to answer this in line with academic standards. The evaluation of the work will emphasize the student's ability to carry out a research process in line with academic requirements: a researchable problem, choice of relevant theory and method, a valid and credible implementation of the research process, awareness of research ethics, analytical skills, documentation, and written presentation ability.
The bachelor thesis is a small and independent research project, where the student chooses the research topic. The thesis can be carried out as a minor empirical study or as a limited literature / document study.
Students must be admitted in the Bachelor in Sociology and Social Analysis.

Have been admitted as a student into the bachelor's program in sociology and social analysis. The bachelor thesis must be seen in connection with the course ME223S Methodology and social analysis. The work on the bachelor thesis is based on teaching and exams from this course.

The student up until cohort 2022 must have completed the following courses:

EX150S/EX153S Study Foundation Semester - Individual, Society and Science,

ME118S Introduction to Research Methods in Social Sciences,

SO114S Introduction to Sociology

SOS1000 Study of social/societal change - Global andlocal challenges,

SOS1001 Classical and Modern Sociological Theory,

ME223S Methodology and social analysis.

The student starting in cohort 2023 angd further must have completed the following courses:

After completing the course, the student has obtained the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • basic knowledge of the connection between key topics and issues, methodological approaches and analysis
  • basic knowledge of research ethics
  • knowledge of formal rules for writing an independent scientific text
  • in-depth knowledge of a specific topic

Skills

  • Be able to make qualified choices of methodological and theoretical resources related to a specific issue
  • Be able to independently apply knowledge related to a specific issue
  • Be able to relate analytically to an empirical or theoretical material
  • Be able to apply the discipline's terminology in written presentation and argumentation
  • Be able to discover and critically assess ethical issues in the research process

Competence

  • Be able to plan and carry out a minor independent research project
  • Be able to utilize the discipline's theoretical and methodological resources in a specific problem or issue
  • Be able to receive and benefit from professional supervision
  • Be able to carry out a research process within current norms and guidelines
No costs except semester registration fee and course literature. It is required that students possess their own laptop.

Required course work.

The thesis should be 10,000-12,000 words (25-30 pages). By agreement with the course coordinator, a thesis can be written by two students. It must be documented which part (s) of the assignment the individual student is responsible for, and the assignment must be 14,000-16,000 words (35-40 pages).

Final grade after oral adjustment

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:
