Phonetics and General Linguistics
SP169L
This course provides a systematic introduction to the way the field of general linguistics looks at the structures that underlie all languages. Focus will be on phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon. Students will learn to use basic linguistic concepts and terminology to describe and analyze pronunciation and grammar. This includes relationships between speech sounds, word structure, sentence structure, meaning and vocabulary. The cultivation of standardized language norms will also be discussed. While the focus will be on Lule Saami, this course is relevant for anyone studying language and/or who is interested in grammar and linguistics.
