Lule Saami Language 1

The course provides a systematic introduction to the structure, phonology, morphology and syntax of the Lule Saami language. Students learn to use basic concepts and terminology to describe and analyze Lule Saami grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and meaning. Developing language skills and putting the language to practical use are also emphasized. The course also provides information about the language's position in society, as well as about and on multilingualism (for example, relationships between minority and majority languages, language preservation and language shift).

KNOWLEDGE

The student will

  • know about the basic structure of Lule Saami in relation to phonology, morphology and syntax
  • have mastery of the Lule Saami orthography in both theory and practice
  • have knowledge of multilingualism and the position of the Saami languages in society

SKILLS

The student will

  • have an overview of the structure of the language
  • have knowledge of the central elements of Saami language linguistics

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student will

  • be familiar with how the language is structured and be able to communicate relevant subject matter
  • develop their own language proficiency
Costs beyond semester registration fees and syllabus literature are expenses for gatherings at Ájluokta/Drag or elsewhere.
Obligatory
This course is largely conducted in Lule Saami, and the students must be able to understand and use Lule Saami. Some of the theoretical parts of the material will be presented and discussed in the form of lectures at course gatherings and via online lectures. That said, this is to a large extent a self-study course, and students are expected to do a good deal of independent work. Assignments and mandatory work are submitted via Canvas, which is the university's digital learning portal.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through subject surveys. Evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.

  • Composite assessment (SV):

All assessments must be passed / approved to complete the course as a whole.

  • Written school exam (SK):

SK is assessed on the basis of letters A-F, where A is best and F is not passed. Counts 100/100 of the grade in the course.

  • Work Requirements (AK): Written, individual AK

Work requirements are considered approved / not approved. Counts 0/100 of the grade.
