Saami Literature

SP181L
Students will receive a general introduction to Saami literature. They will become acquainted with folklore, especially older Saami folklore. In addition they will learn about specific narrative traditions, with an emphasis on early Lule Saami oral traditions. This includes myths, epic joik poetry, legends, fairy tales and sayings/proverbs.

KNOWLEDGE

The student will

The student will

  • have an overview of special features in older Saami literature
  • be able to apply knowledge of Saami folklore in teaching situations

  • have insight into Saami narrative traditions and folklore
  • be able to communicate an understanding of Saami folklore

No tuition fees. Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.

Students should expect costs to incur in relation to sessions at Drag or elsewhere.

Obligatory
This course is largely conducted in Lule Saami, and the students must be able to understand and use Lule Saami. Some of the theoretical parts of the material will be presented and discussed in the form of lectures at course gatherings and via online lectures. That said, this is to a large extent a self-study course, and students are expected to do a good deal of independent work. Assignments and mandatory work are submitted via Canvas, which is the university's digital learning portal.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through subject surveys. Evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.

  • Composite assessment (SV):

All assessments must receive a passing grade in order for the course as a whole to receive a passing grade.

  • Home Exam (HJ):

Individual written take-home exam, which is assessed on the basis of letter grades A-F. A is the best grade and F is a failing grade. It counts as 100/100 of the course grade.

  • Work Requirements (AK):

Work requirements are considered either approved/passed or not approved/failed. They count as 0/100 of the course grade. If the AK does not receive a passing grade, then the candidate will be given the opportunity for a new written submission and a new oral presentation
