Saami Languages and Language History

SPR104L
This course looks at language variation, variation among Saami languages and some distinctive features of some Saami languages. It also includes a comparison of some Lule Saami grammatical elements with corresponding Pite Saami, South Saami and North Saami grammatical elements.
Successfully completed/passed Lule Saami 1 (LU1). See admission requirements.

KNOWLEDGE

The student will

  • have knowledge of language variation
  • have knowledge of the Saami languages and grammatical characteristics of the different Saami languages
  • have knowledge of the main differences between Lule Saami, Pite Saami, South Saami and North Saami
  • have knowledge of differences among Lule Saami dialects

SKILLS

The student will

  • be able to give a clear account of special features in the Saami languages
  • be able to explain some of the main differences between Lule Saami, Pite Saami, South Saami and North Saami
  • be able to explain dialectal differences within Lule Saami

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student will

  • be able to communicate relevant subject matter and an understanding of linguistic variation in some Saami areas
  • develop and strengthen their own language proficiency
No costs beyond semester registration fees and syllabus literature.
Obligatory
This course involves course gatherings. Some of the theoretical parts of the material will be presented and discussed in the form of lectures at course gatherings and via online lectures. That said, this is to a large extent a self-study course, and students are expected to do a good deal of independent work. Assignments and mandatory work are submitted via Canvas, which is the university's digital learning portal. Course gatherings will be in Bodø/Bådåddjo/Buvvda and Ájluokta/Drag.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through subject surveys. Evaluation is part of the university's quality assurance system.

In this course, students are evaluated on the basis of a 6-hour school exam (SK) at the end of the fall semester. The language of the exam is Lule Saami. The course is evaluated with letter grades A-F, where A is the best grade and F is a failing grade. The exame counts as 100/100 of the grade for the course.
