SPU355
Topic SPU355 Nursing care for the elderly in an institution, organization and management is a practice topic carried out in institutions with full-time nursing and caregiving in the municipal health service. The aim is for the students to further develop their clinical competence through observation, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of nursing care in meeting elderly patients with long-term disorders, functional failure and comorbidity. The practical work should be person focused and considerate, focused on the patient's resources. In this practice period students will have a special focus on organization and management. Interprofessional and interdisciplinary interaction are included in this. The student is expected to have a critical, reflective attitude to his/her practical studies. Nursing practice should be knowledge-based and professionally sound.
Exams from the 1st and 2nd year of study must have been passed in order to take the final examination.
After having completed this topic it is expected that the student:
Knowledge
- Knows about geriatrics and nursing for the elderly with illness and/or functional failure
- Knows about factors that affect the organization and management of nursing care in municipal health institutions
Skills
- Can attend to the basic needs and resources for elderly patients in case of illness and functional failure, based on independent assessments and justified nursing practice
- Can perform independent and professionally sound nursing management
- Can manage medicines and carry out procedures in a professionally sound manner
- Can contribute to comprehensive and predictable patient progress through interprofessional and interdisciplinary interaction
General competency
- Can contribute to new thinking and critical reflection about the nursing service in the department
- Can take responsibility for one's own learning and show engagement in nursing practice under supervision.
In connection with the practical programmes of study, students must allow for additional expenses for travel and accommodation in relation to practice placements which lie some distance from the campus.
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Mandatory practice topic.
Practice programme of study Guidance individually and in groups, reflection/reflection paper and study assignments.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Practice 7 weeks.
Practice programmes of study Duration: 7 weeks. Grading system: Pass / Fail.
