Nursing Management and Service Development

SYK2004
The course integrates theory and reflection on leadership, change management, equality, non-discrimination, collaboration, innovation, and user involvement. The aim of the course is to develop competence in organizing and managing nursing services, laying the foundation for efficient workflow, reducing adverse events and unwarranted variation, and ensuring user involvement in a sustainable healthcare service.

All courses from the 1st semester to the 5th semester must be completed in order to begin this course, with the exception of the following situation:

Practical courses in the 4th - 5th semester: in case of illness, failed practice, or other special circumstances, one of the practice periods in the 4th -5th semester can be transferred to the 7th semester, i. e., the following autumn. This will result in a delay of the study.

Knowledge:

  • Has knowledge of leading and organizing nursing care for groups of patients and managing healthcare personnel.
  • Has knowledge of quality and patient safety within the levels of the healthcare system.
  • Is familiar with knowledge of risk factors within healthcare services, and principles and measures aimed at reducing patient harm.
  • Has knowledge of overarching goals in health and social policy, as well as relevant laws and regulations.
  • Has knowledge of person-centered leadership.
  • Is familiar with tools and methods for driving innovation, change, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Has knowledge of factors significant to nurses’ health and work environment.
  • Has knowledge of the structure of the health and welfare services.

Skills:

  • Can reflect on existing routines and methods and can initiate dialogue about the implementation of new knowledge and new working methods.
  • Can identify and assess risk factors related to individuals, systems, and environments, as well as document and systematically follow up on these, including the implementation of appropriate measures.
  • Can plan and carry out service development in collaboration with patients and their next of kin.

General Competence:

  • Can lead and prioritize tasks in the nursing service.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify the need for quality improvement, and to plan and carry out quality development initiatives in collaboration with patients and their next of kin.
  • Can plan and implement measures that ensure the safe transfer of patients between different units and levels in the healthcare system.
  • Has insight into quality indicators
