Gerontology and Geriatrics
SYK302H
The course discusses old age as a social construction. Society, culture and science form the perception of old age in society. Central concepts are prejudice, stereotyping and ageism. Challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of common somatic diseases fo old age are emphasized.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student
Knowledge
- Has thorough knowledge of the view on old age in a societal perspective.
- Has thorough knowledge of the normal aging process and how ageing affect older people's everyday lives.
- Has thorough knowledge of the difference between normal and pathological conditions in old age.
- Has thorough knowledge of research and central treatment principles in geriatrics.
- Has thorough knowledge of the effects of drug treatment for old people.
- Has advanced knowledge of the importance of different coping methods for how older people handle their everyday lives.
Skills
- Is able to analyze professional issues based on gerontology and geriatrics.
- Is able to apply theoretical perspectives of coping to understanding how older people handle their everyday lives.
General competance
- Is able to apply knowledge and skills in gerontology and geriatrics to the analysis and assessment of older people's health problems.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
