The philosophy of science addresses questions about what qualifies as knowledge from different perspectives, providing the foundation for research-based approaches to adapted education.

The course provides a broad introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methods, and various methodological issues. It provides insight into and experience of how to proceed in planning, implementing, evaluating and disseminating research work.

Requires admission to the Master in Adapted Education programme of study, and VIT5021 Philosophy of Science and Research Methodology - introduction.

Knowledge. The candidate has:

  • Advanced knowledge about the philosophy of science and research methodology and research ethics related to their own master’s thesis.
  • Advanced knowledge about concepts, theories and methods related to their own master’s thesis.
  • In-depth knowledge about different perspectives within the philosophy of science and how the researcher’s position influences the research process, related to their own master’s thesis.

Skills - The candidate can:

  • Work independently with their own research project and relate their own master’s thesis to national and international research.
  • Account for and discuss various perspectives within the philosophy of science in relation to knowledge and research relevant to their own master’s thesis.
  • Follow ethical guidelines for research and critically reflect upon ethic issues related to their own master’s thesis.

General competence - The candidate can:

  • Critically reflect on their own and others research
  • Analyse relevant ethic issues related to their own master’s thesis.
No fees other than semester fees and course literature.
Compulsory
Lectures, seminars, study groups and online working methods. The course is organised separately, where philosophy of science issues bind together the methodological research questions that are addressed. Theoretical topics will be highlighted through lectures, case studies, exchanges of experience and group and plenary discussions. A high degree of self-study and independent study group work is required between the sessions.
The course is evaluated annually by the students in course surveys. These evaluations are part of the University’s quality assurance system.
