The course provides basic understanding in order to understand the foundation of research and knowledge development. 

The course introduces special features that combined constitute the general foundation and theoretical basis for professional development, research and theory development: ontology, epistemology and methodology. 

The course will further provide a basis for understanding and justifying the selection of method in professional development, research and theory development.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the candidate:

Knowledge 

• Has knowledge of basic scientific theoretical concepts and their interrelationships 

•Has appreciation of the importance of the scientific theoretical point of departure for knowledge that is  expressed 

• Has thorough knowledge of the scientific theory that underlies the nursing theory and research methods. 

Skills 

• Can describe the scientific foundation for his/her own discipline and related subjects. 

General competence 

• Can communicate about different scientific theoretical theories within the specialist nursing profession and related disciplines. 

• Can apply scientific theoretical knowledge to argue different methodological approaches to academic issues 

• Can communicate examples of how different scientific theoretical perspectives and approaches can complement each other

Mandatory
Lectures, teamwork, seminars with presentations. 
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
No clinical education
Home exam during spring semester 2 weeks
Home exam and all aid is accepted.
