Research Methods and Design

VT315H
The content of the course contributes to a platform for understanding and applying research methods relevant in professional development. The use of evidence-based nursing will be discussed through critical reading of scientific articles. A broad range of possible methods and designs will be presented. 
The content of the course contributes to a platform for understanding and applying research methods relevant in professional development. The use of evidence-based nursing will be discussed through critical reading of scientific articles. A broad range of possible methods and designs will be presented. Contents of the course presentations and at the seminars will range from general research process and design, databases, research-ethical questions, selection of material, data analysis approaches and presentation of results, to critical assessment and evaluation of the result and the research process. 
Enrolled in the master´s program in clinical nursing 

Learning outcomes 

Upon successful completion of the programme, the candidate:

KNOWLEDGE 

Has thorough knowledge of scientific theories and methods in clinical nursing 

Can apply knowledge of methodology in an innovative way to professional development and research 

Has advanced knowledge of research ethics 

SKILLS 

Can analyse and critically relate to different sources of information, such as professionally relevant databases, and can apply these to structure and formulate professional nursing arguments 

Can apply and reflect upon relevant methods for research and professional development in clinical nursing and independently argue the rationale for his or her choice 

Can critically assess scientific articles 

Has advanced knowledge in search for evidence-based knowledge and information on databases 

Has knowledge of and masters basic research methods and approaches to analysis relevant for nursing research 

Can develop a research plan for nursing research 

Can apply current research-ethical norms in developing a research plan 

GENERAL COMPETENCES 

Can analyse and reflect on relevant nursing and research-ethical issues in nursing research 

Can communicate extensive independent work and masters the expressions of the field of research methods 

Can communicate about nursing issues and methodological reflections in selection of research design  

Can apply his or her knowledge and skills in different research methods and research ethics for planning and designing in order to carry out research assignments and projects in clinical nursing 

Has knowledge of new thinking and innovation processes in clinical nursing 

Has advanced knowledge in and can apply evidence-based knowledge in a reflective manner
