Programme description

Are you interested in learning more about research and development work related to sports, while also pursuing a career in cross-country skiing or biathlon? Then this program is perfect for you! The program is based in Meråker and is a part-time study designed for elite athletes—primarily in cross-country skiing, skimo and biathlon. Meråker offers reliable snow conditions in winter and has an active skiing community centered around Meråker Upper Secondary School. Nord University collaborates with the school, providing excellent training conditions year-round.

Career opportunities

The education provides qualifications for various coaching roles in both organized and unorganized settings (e.g., the fitness center industry), as well as other work related to sports, performance development, physical activity, and public health.

Admission to the study program requires the completion of 30 ECTS credits from the one-year sports program.

KNOWLEDGE
The candidate:

  • possesses broad knowledge of current research methods in sports.
  • has an understanding of statistical methods for use in R&D work.
  • has knowledge and insight into development work and research within sports science.

SKILLS
The candidate:

  • can perform measurements and understand concepts such as measurement levels, raw scores, standard scores, and standard deviations.
  • can carry out basic statistical calculations.
  • can summarize and present the results of analyses.
  • can conduct a scientific project, including formulating research questions, planning, data collection, and presentation (both oral and written).
  • can use literature reviews, practical-pedagogical approaches, experimental studies, or surveys to address a research question in sports.

GENERAL COMPETENCE
The candidate:

  • can develop research questions and methods.
  • can identify, evaluate, and reference various methods within qualitative and quantitative research in sports science.
  • can apply knowledge to carry out research and development work.
  • understands various aspects to assess the feasibility of a project.
  • is familiar with ethical guidelines.
  • can communicate their work clearly through scientific writing and presentations.

During the program, students should anticipate expenses for purchasing books and necessary training and outdoor equipment. Due to the program's unique nature, various practical learning arenas are utilized. Therefore, students must also account for transportation costs to these practical learning arenas within the municipality of Meråker, which serves as the study location. Students are responsible for their own transportation to practical learning sites in Meråker. The faculty's reimbursement policies for transportation costs apply only to teaching activities outside the study location/municipality.

This program is specifically designed for elite athletes. A fee is required for this elite athlete adaptation. The fee covers access to strength training facilities, sports halls, cross-country ski trails, roller ski tracks, and other facilities associated with the study location. It also includes daily training support, coaching during two training camps, and access to a testing lab featuring specialized equipment such as a treadmill for skiing, as well as video and data tools necessary for technique analysis. The total fee is NOK 22,000 and covers the entire half-year program (2 semesters).
