Students will explore the work of character development in terms of script writing for short films, commercials, music videos, TV and documentaries.

This course in screenwriting is critical for writers, directors, producers and other creative practitioners involved in the interpretive process. Writing covers the essentials of storytelling for films and goes into detail about structure, character development, three-act structure and writing effective dialogue. This course also introduces students to writing for television.

The second part of the course covers the role and responsibilities of a director in script development, pre-production, production, and post-production. Students learn to tell a story cinematically, use the camera as a tool, prepare a script analysis and engage in the casting and rehearsal process with actors. They will explore the work of directing in short films, commercials, music videos, TV and documentaries. 

The main focus will be on different approaches and styles to directing, acting techniques for film and actor directing. In addition, students are introduced to the work of casting processes and production planning, production management, working with actors and larger groups of extras, as well as contracts and coordination of the actors during shooting (assistant directing). 

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Skills:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of storytelling by writing a short non-dialogue screenplay
  • Be able to develop a believable character description
  • Understand the difference between a protagonist and antagonist
  • Demonstrate insight into the art of direction by directing a short non-dialogue film
  • Understand how to direct actors within the non-dialogue film

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the three act structure
  • Be able to analyse various master plots for different genres
  • Demonstrate an understanding of correct script formatting
  • Understand professional production processes and procedures

General Competence:

  • Create and write effective character descriptions
  • Demonstrate an understanding of writing for the screen
  • Understand artistic and technical limitations of directing a short non-dialogue film
