There is a growing use of Smart initiatives in organizations. The Smart initiatives suggest technological development and digitalization of organizational activities for the improvement of services and products.  This, in turn, demands advanced knowledge, competencies and skills in "smart specialization and management" which suggests an awareness of the complex processes related to assessing, balancing, managing and governing divergent dimensions of Smart initiatives.

The course is structured in two parts. Firstly, theories of Smart Specialization and management will be viewed from domain and method perspectives of digitalization, management and organizational science. In addition, this part will cover different management tools used with introduction of Smart initiatives in organizations. Secondly, the course will cover the existing experience of Smart initiatives in organizations and related practices of Smart Specialization and Management. This part will include case studies from different countries, guest lecturing by practitioners, therefore, giving an illustration of usefulness of smart specialization and management by application to specific contexts.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student:

Knowledge

  • advanced knowledge of smart specialization and management from interdisciplinary perspectives, namely: digitalization, management and organizational science perspectives
  • thorough knowledge of of theoretical underpinnings related to smart specialization and management
  • can apply knowledge of practical implications of smart specialization and management in the businesses in the different contexts
  • can analyse smart specialization and management initiatives within different sectors

Skills

  • can analyse existing theories of smart specialization and management and work independently with practical and theoretical problem solving related to smart initiatives
  • can analyse and critically examine the limitations and implications of various information sources used for smart specialization and management in different organization
  • can carry out academic work on smart specialization and management in accordance with research ethical standards and in independent way.

General Competence

  • can communicate in a written form and advocate solutions to the problems related to development of Smart initiatives from a management perspective
  • has  ability to assess and discuss the tensions between theory and practice
  • can apply their knowledge and skills to work and solve problems in groups
No cost except semester registration fee and required books/literature.
Mandatory
Lectures in plenary sessions will be the major teaching form. Guest lecturers will also be provided during 3 sets of intensive week gatherings in Bodø, as well as case-studies with following presentations and discussions. It is still paramount that each and every student is supposed to learn a lot from a bunch of sources: own class activities, active interaction and discussion with others in a team, active class participation. Working in teams will be stimulated under the group assignment. It is important that all members of the group contribute to discussion. Therefore, an intensive self-study prior to class and team discussions is very important.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.

The course grade will be set on the basis of two different evaluations:

  • Delivery of a individual written report, to be delivered. It is a more theoretical based report (i.e. short literature review). This will account for 60% of the grade with regular Norwegian grading system (A-F).
  • Oral presentation of the case work (to be done in groups). It will be more practical based report (i.e. description of a case study). The oral presentation could take max 30 minutes (presentation and defense). 40% of the grade with regular Norwegian grading system (A-F).
