Doing the Systematic Literature Review

The number of academic publications is steadily increasing at a rapid pace and it is becoming increasingly unfeasible to remain current with everything that is being published. Moreover, the emphasis on empirical contributions has resulted in voluminous and fragmented research streams. In this context, literature reviews are increasingly assuming a crucial role in synthesizing past research findings. Several approaches to review the literature exist, ranging from rapid review to systematic literature review. This course aims at provide guidance on systematic literature review, with a focus on bibliometric approach, which has the potential to introduce a transparent, and reproducible review process based on the statistical measurement of science, scientists, or scientific activity. In the course the statistical package developed in the R language, Bibliometrix, will be presented to participants. The course is made up of formal lectures and practical sessions during which participants will learn how to use Bibliometrix.

- can know in comprehensive and systematic way the existing knowledge and intellectual structure of a particular field

- can offer a critique of the field as result of in-depth analysis of existing literature

- can contribute to the advancement of knowledge by recommending some new direction for future research and by addressing some of them in the empirical section of the thesis

- can search the literature using alternative approaches based on keywords

– can handle both qualitative and quantitative approaches to understand and organize the selected literature

– can do a bibliometric analysis and handle the bibliometric package “bibliometrix” (www.bibliometrix.org/)

- can learn how to search for literature in the major scientific databases

– can develop critical thinking skills

– can participate in debates in the field in international forums

Lectures and practice sessions with the bibliometrix software.
