Sletnes is a specialised intensive care nurse with clinical experience from emergency departments and intensive care units. He holds a master's degree in clinical nursing and has previous academic experience as an Assistant Professor in the postgraduate intensive care nursing program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). In addition, he has competence in in pedagogy through university pedagogy training.


Sletnes is currently employed as an Assistant Professor and PhD candidate at the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences at Nord University.

Traditionally, Sletnes teaches and supervises in the courses SYK2000, SYK2001, SYK2003, HEL2001, PRA2029, and PRA2030. In addition, he has been involved in organizing multiple facilitator courses for both internal academic staff at Nord University and external participants. He has also contributed to organizing professional development days, focusing on acute and critical care, for newly employed physicians at Nord-Trøndelag Hospital Trust. As of January 1, 2025, he is a PhD candidate in a four-year PhD project, with 25% of the position dedicated to teaching responsibilities.


Sletnes is also a certified instructor in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for Healthcare Professionals, accredited by the Norwegian Resuscitation Council.


In addition to his teaching duties, Sletnes serves as the excercise leader for the large mass casualty exercise held annually in Mid-Norway. This exercise involves all second-year nursing students affiliated with the Levanger campus. The participation of nursing students is based on the National Regulations for Nursing Education, which state that students must be familiar with measures to preserve life and health in major accidents, crisis situations, and disasters.

The exercise is a collaboration between Nord University, Trøndelag Police Department, Nord-Trøndelag Hospital Trust, Levanger Fire and Rescue, Innherred Intermunicipal Emergency Outpatient Department, Brann Midt IKS, Levanger Municipality, Verdal Municipality, and the Civil Defense. The Norwegian Air Ambulance (NLA) and the Royal Norwegian Air Force's rescue helicopter squadron (330) regularly participate. Additionally, private sector partners are always involved. In total, approximately 400 people take part in the annual exercise.

Sletnes' PhD project focuses on the use of simulation-based learning in mass casualty education within undergraduate nursing education. His primary supervisor is Professor Marcel Köhler, while his co-supervisors are Associate Professor Ingunn Jystad and Professor Gørill Haugan.
