I research closed-containment aquaculture systems, which are aquaculture facilities that are separated from the environment by an impermeable wall. Such facilities can be land-based, for example recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), or floating closed systems in the sea. Closed systems reduce the impact on the surrounding environment and in the case of Atlantic salmon culture, closed systems solve the challenges with sea lice. But the technology is not fully developed, and many challenges remain in closed-containment systems. In my research, I therefore focus on improving control of the rearing environment and operations in such facilities, especially in facilities for Atlantic salmon. I use a variety of approaches, such as: studying the biological requirements of salmon in closed systems, research on water treatment technology and hydrodynamics, and the use of digitalization such as artificial intelligence and computer modeling to improve the management of closed aquaculture facilities. In addition, I have several other research interests related to intensive aquaculture, such as fish physiology and nutrition, nitrogen metabolism in fish, amino acid metabolism and nutrition, and fish larval physiology.
