My research area is English didactics / foreign language didactics. I am interested in how different learning environments can affect learning with a focus on students emotions and motivation. I am particularly interested in oral communication in English and I think communicating orally in a foreign language is of utmost importance. In addition, spoken communication in a foreign language is challenging to learn.
My PhD thesis investigated the potential for learning oral communication in English (using outdoor education) in lower secondary school in Norway and how outdoor environments can affect students' foreign language anxiety, foreign language enjoyment and motivation. The positive results were interpreted to be due to outdoor environments offering different affordances (learning opportunities) than the classroom.
In my PhD thesis I introduced the concepts «thematic affordances» and "environmental affordances" under the umbrella term "outdoor affordances". Thematic affordances refers to potential themes that outdoor environments offer which students can talk about and «environmental affordances» refers to the possibilities the outdoors offer for organising the teaching, e.g. the outdoors offer more space between groups of students when speaking the foreign language. In my PhD I applied both quantitative and qualitative research methods (mixed methods).
