Acute Care, Innovation and Patient Safety (AKIP)

The AKIP research group focuses on patient-centered research, particularly on care pathways in acute and specialized healthcare situations. Key areas of interest include organization, leadership, decision-making, and the use of innovative technological solutions.

The group employs a broad methodological repertoire, utilizing quantitative methods such as surveys and randomized controlled trials, as well as qualitative approaches including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and systematic literature reviews.

AKIP has a strong interdisciplinary profile and maintains close collaborations with both national and international research environments. The group places significant emphasis on academic development and research dissemination, and organizes a range of recurring activities throughout the year, including:

  • Monthly meetings
  • Writing gatherings
  • Joint conference attendance
  • Journal Clubs

Research areas and overview of members

  • The research group contributes to knowledge development in emergency care, with a focus on improving emergency medical services, including specialized nursing and paramedicine. The group explores crisis management across a wide range of situations – from individual patient encounters to large-scale mass casualty incidents – and maintains a close collaboration with Exercise Nord (Øvelse Nord).

Current research projects within the group include:

    • Pedersen, I., Strandås, M & Sætren G. - Parasafe: Situational awareness in paramedicine. Lenke: Parasafe.
    • Dahle, T., N., Strandås, M., Samdal, M. & Ottestad, W. – The use of rescue hoist in the Norwegian Helicopter Emergency Service
    • Faldaas, B., Storm, B. S., Ingul, C. & Nielsen, E. W. - RescueDoppler  Lenke: RescueDoppler
  • The research group is dedicated to driving innovation and forward-thinking approaches within the healthcare sector, with a strong emphasis on technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and progressive models of organization and leadership. By drawing on interdisciplinary expertise, the group develops solutions to pressing challenges such as staffing shortages, suboptimal use of professional competencies, and the need for sustainable service delivery. A key project, funded by the Research Council of Norway, investigates how AI-based scheduling tools can enhance task allocation and resource efficiency in municipal health and care services. The overarching goal is to elevate the quality of care, improve working conditions for healthcare professionals, and enable smarter, more adaptive organizational practices for the future.

Current research projects within the group include:

  • Our research group is committed to advancing patient safety by identifying and implementing strategies that enhance the quality and safety of nursing care. A key focus is on defining and supporting the roles and responsibilities of both general and specialized nurses in safeguarding patient safety across various healthcare settings. Current research projects within the group include:

    • Glarcher, M. & Vaismoradi, M. – Establishing and developing a patient safety culture in general and specialized nursing practice.
    • Vaismoradi, M. – The role of specialized nurses in promoting a patient safety culture and improving medication management in both short- and long-term care settings.
    • Vaismoradi, M. – Nurse-led and specialized nurse-led initiatives for improving patient safety through digitally assisted care.
    • Strandås, M. & Vaismoradi, M. – Patient safety and safety culture in emergency and prehospital care, with a focus on the roles and responsibilities of nurses and healthcare personnel.
    • Mardani, A. & Vaismoradi, M. – The application of digital health solution as a social media app to enhance patient safety and medication management in home care for patients with cardiac conditions.
