The main focus is species knowledge and determination of species, particularly indicator species and redlisted species. Forest inhabiting species in rare and threatened habitats, i.e. boreal rainforest, calcareous coniferous forest, oldgrowth spruce forest and broadleaved deciduous forest are given first priority.
The course consists of two modules (lichens and moss), 5 credits each.
The bachelor course BIO2060 Floristic, or equivalent courses.
After completed course, the student is expected to possess the following knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge:
- be familiar with techniques and literature necessary for determination of lichens and moss
- possess advanced knowledge of the diversity of lichens and moss, particularly indicator species and red listed species
- has advanced knowledge on the use of lichens and moss for identification and estimation of value of nature types in general and hotspot- areas for biodiversity in particular
Skills:
- be able to use the main techniques for identification of lichens and moss, including microscopy and use of color reagents and thin layer chromatography (TLC) etc.
- is able to take samples of species for documentation in a safe and properly way and to prepare these for incorporation in a university herbarium, including registration of all necessary locality parameters
- be able to estimate the value of nature types based on the diversity of lichens and moss
General competence:
- know how to make principal surveys of the diversity of lichens and moss within a particular delimited area
In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his disposal.
Elective.
Lectures, laboratory excercises with species determination including microscopy, and field excursions.
Evaluated annually by students through course surveys. These evaluations are included in the university’s quality assurance system.
