Marine Research Methods at Sea

In this course you will get an introduction to the different ways of sampling marine biota (plankton, benthos, fish) and how to measure physical and chemical parameters in marine ecosystems. During several day-cruises with different research vessels (e.g. one week with RV Prinsesse Ingrid Alexandra’) you will use different sampling gear, process the samples and compare the different methods.

The course gives a practical and theoretical introduction to offshore sampling methods in marine research. The focus is on obtaining a basic of knowledge of the different marine ecosystem components and their physical environment, and how to sample or measure these.

The course comprises learning sampling methods used in marine science and oceanography (e.g. Secchi-disc, CTD, water sampling, ADCP, drifters), plankton ecology (using different plankton nets, automated samplers), sediment biogeochemistry & infauna ecology (Van Veen grab, Gimini corer, meiofauna corer, biogeochemical measurements of the sediment, experimental incubations), invertebrate epifauna and demersal fish ecology, (trawling, dredging, traps and non-invasive sampling with ROVs, drop-cam, light and/or baited video traps if applicable).

During a one-week cruise with RV ‘Prinsesse Ingrid Alexandra’ in the local fjords, all these methods will be practiced and applied in project teams. Learning about sample processing, analytical procedures and qualitative assessment of the different methods will be done in project groups, providing essential knowledge and skill relevant for the working life of (marine) biologists.

  • can apply scientific knowledge and methods in marine research, which are applicable to environmental assessment and monitoring, such as used in aquaculture, fisheries, and environmental science.
  • can evaluate and refer to academic resources and present scientific findings using scholarly forms of communication
  • can approach problems and make decisions regarding marine sampling techniques based on scientific knowledge
  • has hands-on experience in ship based sampling and safety procedures on board a research ship

General competence

The candidate

  • can plan and carry out assignments alone and in teams over the semester and present the subject orally and in writing
  • can plan and evaluate basic research campaigns
  • can discuss and exchange knowledge and opinions with others within the community of the field
In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his disposal.
Elective course for students in the Master in Biosciences.
Field station and campus based lectures, seminars, field excursions and lab courses. Daily research cruises on research vessels (RV Prinsesse Ingrid Alexandra and Tanteyen).
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies (mid-term evaluation and final evaluation). These evaluations are included in the universities quality assurance system.

• Portfolio that includes AK Assessment tasks (pass / not pass) and a written assignment (100%) A-F graded

• OD Obligatory participation in 80% of the cruises and field work
