Diversity and Mastering
Diversity and proficiency in kindergarten and school seeks to develop further students knowledge, skills and general competencies obtained from kindergarten teacher education or other similar foundation education. The unit is comprised of drama, Norwegian and pedagogy, as well as religion, life approaches and ethics. It provides an integrated, interdisciplinary approach aimed at developing students intercultural understanding and pedagogical approaches.
This specialization places significance on understanding how cooperation and relations between individuals develops the foundations for play, learning and personal growth, as well as development of democratic thinking. The unit aims to contribute to developing students competencies in their work with children and students of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds and varying outlooks on life. Further, the unit contributes to strengthening students competencies for linguistic and cultural work with multilingual children. The unit also aims to contribute to students knowledge about indigenous perspectives, national minorities, equality and community, in accordance with laws and international conventions and plans. Another important element of the unit is strengthening students competencies in relation to collaboration with parents, colleagues and other partners within kindergarten/school environments.
Knowledge and understanding:
Upon completion, students should have:
- knowledge about play and learning, mindfulness and growth in a diverse society
- knowledge about pedagogy and pedagogical processes in kindergartens in relation to both children and adults
- have knowledge about how literature can contribute to linguistic development and the development of multicultural understanding
- knowledge about multilingualism and how Norwegian is, as a second language, acquired, developed and mapped
- knowledge about methods, strategies and organizational approaches for reading comprehension and language training
- knowledge about working approaches in the field of drama, and strategies which can contribute to understanding and professional and social development
- knowledge about development and preservation of individual and collective identity, associated with religion or life approach, in kindergarten and school
- knowledge about inclusive principles and methods for professional and pedagogical planning and evaluation of the learning and development environment in kindergarten and school
- have knowledge about one's own professional mission in society, about children's rights, diversity and the field of multiculturalism from historic and contemporary perspectives
- knowledge about relevant ethical theories and understanding of ethical challenges for children and adults, connected to the multicultural community in kindergartens and schools
Skills:
Upon completion, students should be able to:
- adapt to different fields and methods of teaching, and plan, carry out and evaluate teaching and experiences of multilingual children and students
- facilitate an inclusive and stimulating teaching environment in cooperation with children, students and parents/guardians
- make decisions with a background in research-based knowledge as well as utilize such knowledge in their daily work with children, students and staff
- facilitate mapping of the linguistic competencies of multilingual children in order to adapt language training, concept development and reading comprehension, as well as be familiar with important principles and methods for development of reading comprehension and strategies
- implement approaches for language, literature and drama work, which strengthen play, learning and development of cultural sensitivity in multilingual children and students.
- utilize their own professional knowledge about religious identity and life approaches in their work, in order to create an atmosphere of respect, tolerance and equal worth in a group of children, in the classroom and in encounters with parents
- work with parents and collaborative partners to achieve the best outcomes for the child
- give and receive professional occupational guidance in encounters with colleagues and staff members
- manage knowledge from the field of multiculturalism and use this in their own professional development and in development and innovation in their field
General competence:
Upon completion, students should:
- have further developed their knowledge, insight and understanding of multicultural and linguistic processes, in order to utilize the same within common pedagogy, multicultural pedagogy and innovation in kindergartens and schools
- have ethical and professional insight into the use of professional mapping and methods in collaboration with children, students and parents
- be able to use their professional knowledge critically, creatively and reflectively in order to promote multicultural pedagogy in kindergartens and schools
- have fundamental tolerance interest and respect for children's and student's background, regardless of cultural or religious association, or life approach
