Startup and Business Development

ENT5014
Through the course, students will gain first-hand knowledge of and their own experience of developing a start-up project from idea to new business with an emphasis on innovation. Students will start a new business that can be a new business, or a significant expansion of an existing business (such as a spin-off, new department, new market area, new product / service etc). The students will work together in teams of 2-5 students with their start-up project, but will also act as sparring partners for each other across teams. The students will thus also gain experience and knowledge from being an advisor for others' start-up projects. The students will thus gain experience and knowledge about start-up and business development from several projects and from several perspectives that ensure a breadth in the students' experience points and knowledge base. The course emphasizes such learning through own experience and learning from others' experience / knowledge in interaction with theory / literature. The course will also function as a learning laboratory for other core subjects at the MSc in Entrepreneurship and Business Development by using the start-up projects as a learning tool for student-active and experience-based learning.
Knowledge After completing this course, students will have • Advanced knowledge of and can apply knowledge to start-up and business development of new business • Extensive practical knowledge of starting up and business development of new business • High professional insight into concepts related to the start-up and development of new business • Advanced understanding of the challenges associated with business development of innovation • Extensive insight into the public policy apparatus Skills After completing this course, students should be able to: • Critical ability to reflect on professional literature in light of own / others' experiences with starting up and business development of new business • Develop a business plan for starting a new business • Develop a business model for starting a new business • Present start-up projects to external audiences and interest groups • Work independently in teams to solve challenges related to business development • Prepare applications for public funding of start-up / business development General competence After completing this course, students should be able to: • Plan / design and implement start-up processes of new business • Critically reflect on teams and group processes that are important for the start-up and business development of a new business. • Critically reflect on the role of the business idea / business opportunity and its development in the start-up and business development of a new business • Use professional literature in the start-up and business development of a new business
  • Portfolio, grade A-F, counts for 75%
  • Oral exam, grade A-F, counts for 25%
  • Two work requirements must be approved before the portfolio can be submitted for grading.
