Fascism and National Socialism 1918–1945
HI210S
This course provides a fairly thorough introduction to the fascist and national socialist movement in Europe between the wars, with an emphasis on fascism in Italy, National Socialism in Germany and the implications for Norway. The emphasis is on discussing the preconditions for the growth in these movements, the ideological content and policies of the fascist regimes in practice after they had taken power in Italy and Germany. It also aims to show how different researchers have different perspectives on key points within this topic.
On successful completion of the course:
Knowledge
- The student should acquire knowledge of the development of fascism in Italy and National Socialism in Germany in the Inter-War period, and of the treatment of these topics in the more important literature.
Abilities
- Students should be able to present and discuss different aspects of fascism and National Socialism in independent written work.
General competence
- Students should be able to access an advanced research literature and to take a stance on complex academic questions.
None other than semester fee and syllabus literature.
Part of English language semester package Introduction to Norwegian History (Spring).
Lectures and seminars.
Annual evaluations which are included in the university´s quality assurance system.
Portfolio: 2 short papers (3-5 pages each).

General study competence or practical competence according to current regulations.
