Animal Health and Welfare

For the part of this course that focuses on animal health: Key issues related to health/disease, disease-preventing work, relevant laws, regulations and agreements, food safety, zoonoses etc. Introduction to diseases related to the livestock's production, feeding and environment. The key contagious livestock diseases, first and foremost those occurring in Norway, but also some of those that occur in other countries and that we should be aware of. For the part of this course that focuses on animal welfare: Animal welfare as a term and subject area from both a biological, ethological, ethical and moral perspective. Animal welfare rights related to management, laws and regulations.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student is expected to posess the following:

Knowledge:

  • Has thorough knowledge of key terms, assessments and issues related to health and disease in general
  • Has basick knowledge of key diseases occurring or that may occur among the following kinds of livestock: cattle, horse, pig, sheep, goat, poultry, dogs and cats
  • Has basic knowledge in animal welfare, both in general and specifically related to livestock
  • Has knowledge of key laws and regulations related to issues in animal health and aninal welfare
  • Has knowledge of key research areas in animal health and animal welfare

Skills:

  • Can account for reasons why various diseases arise and occur in livestock
  • Can conduct analyses and make simple calculations related to disease and health
  • Can propose potential solutions to relevant health challenges based on knowledge and analytical skills
  • Can analyse and make simple calculations on issues related to the animal welfare of livestock

General competence:

  • Has knowledge of and developed the ability to reflect upon and assess issues where animal health and welfare of livestock is a key component
  • Is able to propose preemptive measures to prevent diseases and animal welfare issues for livestock
  • Has the knowledge and skills required to communicate about issues and potential solutions in the field in a clear and comprehensible way
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Compulsory
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Due to the Covid-19 epedemic, a number of assessments and exams at Nord University has been changed.

Changes are made in accordance with the Temporary Regulations on Supplements to Regulation 31/01/2019 no. 63: Concerning Studies and Examinations at Nord University - Extraordinary Measures as a Result of the Coronavirus Epidemic- according to §2 of the Corona Epidemic, Assessment Methods, Sections 1-3

To accommodate this, the form of assessment will be changed from Written School examination to Take-home Examination on this course in the spring of 2020
