JUR1001
JUR1001 is an introductory course that provides insight into key aspects of administrative law.
The course provides an introduction to key concepts in the Norwegian legal system, with emphasis on administrative and procedural law. Students gain insight into legal frameworks and methods, and get the opportunity to practice their knowledge through exercises.
Admission is based on Higher Education Entrance Qualification or prior learning and work experience in accordance with applicable regulations.
After completion, students should:
Knowledge:
- have broad knowledge of the legal framework for public administration in Norway
- have good knowledge of important parts of procedural law, such as impartiality, case preparation and guidance, publicity and opportunities for appeal
- have an understanding of the different roles of public bodies, and the relationship between them (public / private actor, local / regional / national authority, etc.).
Skills:
- be able to identify and discuss legal issues regarding the public administration in Norway
- be able to find and assess relevant legal material, and apply this to assess specific issues
- be able to present the result of discussion and assessment in line with professional norms.
General competence:
- know important historical and social justifications for the administrative regulation, and be able to assess current rules in the light of these
- know main elements in legal method, and have the ability to critically evaluate one's own efforts in light of this knowledge.
In addition to the semester fee and course literature, students are expected to provide their own laptop computer. Students must cover board and lodging expenses during the sessions. Bus expenses for excursions are paid by Nord University.
Compulsory for students at the bachelor programme in Geography and Spatial Planning. Elective for other students.
The teaching mainly takes place in connection with three gatherings, in the form of lectures, excursions and group work. In the periods between gatherings, there is online support and students will work on assignments that receive individual feedback. Gatherings are compulsory.
The study program is evaluated annually by the students through course evaluations and study program evaluation. The evaluations are part of the university’s quality assurance system.
Composite assessment. Students will receive a letter grade.
- Obligatory participation accounts for 0/100 of the grade and will be approved / not approved.
- Must be passed before the beginning of the Home Exam.
- Home Exam, 6 hours, accounts for 100/100 of the grade.
No prerequisite knowledge required apart from meeting admission requirements.
