Music Production 2

MUP520

The course is a natural continuation of Music Production 1, with room for specialization, and will have an increased emphasis on the music production process itself. The course is therefore aimed at providing the students with a competence in producing music in a broad sense. ProTools as tools will be central to the work on the course, and the topics here will be creative work both with arranging and composing. A further theoretical introduction to digital production technology will be given. Much of the time will be devoted to practical studio work, and students will learn about general studio procedures and studio use. Most of the study is practice-orientated, and the teaching will take place in the music department's various sound studios and computer labs. Students will learn how to organize, record, edit and mix tracks in a basic way, step by step.

Content:

  • ProTools and other current digital tools form the basis for creative composition, arranging and editing.
  • Acoustics and introduction to acoustic spaces.
  • Practical studio work: various forms of recording, editing, mixing and completion of recordings.
  • Music and rights (copyrights, TONO, etc.).
  • Popular music analysis and understanding of style.
  • The music industry.

Each student shall create a relevant project either alone or with fellow students. The choice of project is made in consultation with a supervisor, but the student must organise the planning and implementation himself/herself. Examples of such projects may include recording and sound processing of a concert/performance or a CD production with a band.
