SPO2010
The Intermediate Game Design course brings the topics from DES1000 - Game Design to the next level. This course will go deeper into the design of games within different genres and using a variety of technologies, i.e.: VR, AR, AI and more, with the support of relevant game engines and with given input and interaction technologies.
The course introduces cutting-edge technologies that can be used for video game experiences, adapted to different genres of games with a variety of input and interaction technologies, using relevant game engines. It will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of different game engines. In addition, it will go deeper into UI/UX and level design and showcasing how this can be adopted to the use of different technologies (VR, AR, AI and more). The course will emphasize experimental design and player immersion.
Restricted to students at the Bachelor studies in Games and Entertainment Technology, CG art and Animation, Film and TV production and connected study programs at our international partner institutions.
SPO1008 Game Design
After completing the course, the student:
Knowledge
- Understands advanced game design principles
- Knows of the pros and cons of using different game engines for the development of a variety of technologies
- Has a deep understanding of how to design the UI, UX and levels for games developed to support different technologies
- Understands how these designs must be adapted to accessibility issues
- Has insight on what designs are more suited for player immersion
Skills
- Can demonstrate the basic features of given game engines
- Can reason for the UI, UX and level design recommended for different technologies
- Can reflect upon the pros and cons on a given product developed
- Can implement advanced game design principles to given games
- Can develop a video game that support the use of cutting-edge technologies
General competence
- Has insight about companies that uses cutting-edge technologies for game experiences or similar
- Can take on a diverse set of roles needed for game development projects
- Is inclusive both in group work and in the design of given products
In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his/her disposal.
Elective
The course is a blend of theoretical walkthroughs and learning activities focusing on developing video games with the use of cutting-edge technologies. The learning activities will be arranged through group work and students will be giving peer feedback on their projects and games produced.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Assignment (OP) Individual (100/100)
Graded: A-F
Generating an answer using ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence and submitting it wholly or partially as one's own answer, is considered cheating.
