SPU235
The course SPU235 Nursing and Social - nationally and internationally is a theoretical subject. The subject is a Social Science Course to provide the student with knowledge, skills and attitudes to explain, apply and assess theoretical social knowledge when meeting with patients locally, nationally and globally. Particular emphasis will be given to the consequences of globalisation nationally and internationally. The course will be taught in English.
The student may attend class teaching for this course, but to take the examination, the student must have passed the first year of study.
After having completed the course, it is expected that the student:
Knowledge
- Can explain different factors and social conditions that affect public health
- Knows about diverse cultural perspectives for health and sickness, and how the gender dimension has significance in health work.
- Knows about multicultural society and can describe cultural differences and similarities between people
- Knows the central priority areas within public health work nationally and globally, and how this requires interaction between countries and sectors.
- Can compare/present Norwegian health care in an international and multicultural perspective.
Skills
- Can communicate with people from different religious and cultural backgrounds.
- Can apply a culturally sensitive approach in nursing.
General Competency
- Recognizes cultural differences and shows respect towards and a willingness to engage in cultural meetings with patients and relatives regardless of religious or cultural background
No tuition fees. Semester fees and cost of course literature apply.
Central themes will be taught in lectures.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Examination:
Group take-home examination: 4 days
Maximum 3000 words.
International students and internal students who have a practice period abroad shall write the examination in English, while other students may choose to write in Norwegian or English.
