Topic SPU257 The practice of nursing care for people with acute and long-term illness and comorbidity, part 2 is a practice topic. The course is undertaken in the specialist health services and district medical centre and will provide students the possibility to further develop their clinical competence through training in observation, assessment, planning and nursing practice.
Topic SPU257 The practice of nursing care for people with acute and long-term illness and comorbidity, part 2 is a practice topic. The course is undertaken in the specialist health services and district medical centre and will provide students the possibility to further develop their clinical competence through training in observation, assessment, planning and nursing practice. The student will develop an understanding of how the patient's basic needs can be taken care of in cases of acute and long-term illness and comorbidity. Practical skills related to communication and practical procedures are extended through training and reflection. During this period of practice, the student will also focus on patient care and interprofessional and interdisciplinary interaction. Nursing practice should be knowledge-based and professionally sound.
Admission will be on the basis of Higher Education Entrance Qualification or prior learning and work experience according to current regulations.
After having completed this topic it is expected that the student:
Knowledge
- Knows about how the patient's health condition can be affected by acute and long-term illness and comorbidity.

- Can ensure basic needs for people with acute and long-term illness and comorbidity and justify the nursing practice
- Can use professional communication when meeting patients, relatives and colleagues
- Can reflect on the role of the nurse in interprofessional and interdisciplinary interaction.
- Can ensure safety in practical procedures and in the handling and distribution of medicines.
- Can contribute to suitably dignified, comprehensive and predictable patient progress
General competency
- Can identify and reflect on ethical challenges in the ward/department.
- Can reflect on both one's own nursing practice and that of others as well as one's own nursing identity, and show willingness and dedication in developing one's own nursing skills under supervision.
In connection with the practical programmes of study, students must allow for additional expenses for travel and accommodation in relation to practice placements which lie some distance from the campus.

Mandatory practice topic.
Practice programme of study Guidance individually and in groups, reflection/reflection paper and study assignments.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
Practice 8 weeks.

Grading scale: Pass / Fail.
