Philosophy of Science and Research Methodology 1 address questions about what qualifies as knowledge from different perspectives, providing the basis for research-based approaches to speech therapy. The course offers a broad introduction to scientific theoretical approaches and various methodological issues. It will focus on various research paradigms, traditions and the connection between ontology, epistemology and the choice of research approach. It provides insight into and experience of how to proceed in planning, implementing, evaluating and disseminating research work.

Knowledge

The student shall possess

  • in-depth knowledge of the philosophy of science relevant to the field of speech therapy, both nationally and internationally
  • in-depth knowledge of the theory of science relevant to the field of speech therapy, both nationally and internationally
  • in-depth knowledge of the different perspectives of the theory of science and how the researcher’s position influences the research process
  • in-depth knowledge of key ethical models and ethical regulations for research

Skills

The student must be able to

  • plan and carry out independent research work based on the chosen topic and research question, and place their own research contribution in a national and international context.
  • explain and discuss the scientific theoretical basis in accordance with the issue and research questions in their own project
  • follow ethical guidelines for research and reflect critically on ethical aspects related to their own research work

General competence

The student must be able to

  • have an opinion on various scientific theoretical positions
  • demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their own and others' research
  • demonstrate the ability to make independent ethical assessments in their occupational field
  • plan, carry out, evaluate and disseminate their own research work
  • contribute to new thinking and innovation in the field
No costs except semester registration fee and syllabus literature.
Compulsory
The course is structured as separate courses related to the different topics, in which relevant research questions link on to the methodical questions dealt with. Theoretical topics are highlighted through lectures, cases, sharing experiences as well as group discussions. It is expected from the candidates to work independently and in groups between the sessions.
The study programme is evaluated annually by students by way of course evaluation studies. These evaluations are included in the university's quality assurance system.

Compound assessment:

Written assignment: The assignement must be geared towards the student’s own master's project. Form of assessment: Pass/fail. Represents 100/100.

Compulsory participation 80% Represents 0/100. Assessed as approved/not approved.

"Theory of science and method 1" must be completed and approved before the exam for the "PE323L Master's thesis Speech Therapy" course can be taken. This course is recommended prior knowledge for "Theory of science and method 2".

Overlap refers to a similarity between courses with the same content. Therefore, you will receive the following reduction in credits if you have taken the courses listed below:
