This programme provides you with strong skills and knowledge in English language, literature, and culture. The programme is taught online.


Programme description

As citizens of the world, we need good English skills and intercultural awareness. English is a world language and has a central role in education, work, communication, leisure, and for personal growth. The online One-Year Programme provides insights into how language works, is used, is acquired, changes, and how we process language cognitively. In addition, the online One-Year Programme introduces different cultural aspects of the English-speaking world. The programme emphasises active student participation with ample opportunities to practice and improve a wide range of English skills. Classes will be delivered online only. Career opportunities

The English One Year Programme facilitates professional language and communication development for professionals working across a range of fields in both the public and private sectors, including communication, tourism, culture, education and social work.

Teaching methods

All course instruction, except the trip to York, will be delivered online only.

There will be live online instruction Mondays and Fridays from 14.00-16.00. Additional instruction and coursework takes place asynchronously.

Participation in live teaching is compulsory, with a requirement of 80% attendance. There is no recording of the teaching.

Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse); the requirements are specified in the GSU-list.
A one-week stay at the Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York, England, is offered as part of this course. Expenses for the study trip to York (travel, tuition (NOK 1500), accommodation, food).
Students who take the Online One-Year Programme in English (60 ECTS) as part of a primary school teacher education programme may, for example, apply for admission to a Master's degree in subject didactics with a specialization in foreign languages. The education may also be included in a bachelor's degree or used as continuing education.

KNOWLEDGE
After graduation, the candidate

  • has foundational knowledge of the sound structures, word patterns, and grammatical structure of the English language as well as insight into the acquisition of a second language
  • has knowledge of English and its developing role as a contact language for people from different countries and cultures, as well as its importance in the workplace
  • has knowledge of and can distinguish between literary genres
  • understands the conventions of academic writing, including responsible research ethics, use of secondary sources and appropriate uses of generative AI
  • has insight into the possibilities for the subject's role in developing interpersonal communication, values, sustainability, respect, and tolerance
  • has knowledge of strategies for linguistic, thematic, critical, and analytical approaches to literature and other texts

SKILLS
After graduation, the candidate

  • has the ability and expertise to further their professional development in English within
    our present academic structure
  • can use appropriate methods for describing the structure and expression of the English language within its social and cultural context (i.e. discourse analysis)
  • can analyze and write research-based articles on literary texts, and also apply precise and customized concepts in working with texts
  • can explore historical, contemporary, children’s and young adult literature as a means of learning about language, values, and cultures
  • can use both oral and written English functionally and confidently for varied audiences, and with appropriate digital tools and technology


GENERAL COMPETENCE
After graduation, the candidate

  • can convey relevant subject matter in English in an appropriate way
  • can use digital technologies as a means of learning and reflection
  • can work independently and with others

No tuition fees for students within EU/EEA/EFTA.

Costs for semester registration and course literature apply.
