Studenter må oppfylle gjeldene opptakskrav ved tilhørende studieprogram.

The course consists of three parts that are closely related; entrepreneurship, small business management and doing business internationally. Entrepreneurship as a research field is discussed related to the topics: individual(s), process, resources, strategy, organization and results. Small business management has a particular focus on challenges related to corporate survival and growth. The course offers students greater insight into conditions for doing business internationally. The course also covers various aspects of international marketing strategy, such as understanding the international marketing environment, product and brand strategies in international markets and international marketing operations.  After completing the course the student should have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

the student will have:

  • knowledge about entrepreneurship and small business management
  • knowledge of purpose and drivers for entrepreneurship
  • knowledge about differences and similarities, various definitions and classification of different types of entrepreneurs and businesses
  • knowledge of the conditions for entrepreneurship and small business as well as the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic development
  • knowledge of strategies that promote business growth and survival
  • knowledge of strategies for doing business internationally
  • knowledge of special challenges related to the operation and development of family businesses

Skills The student should:

  • contribute to the identification and commercialization of business ideas
  • be able to evaluate a business opportunity and specify the steps one must take to increase the likelihood of success
  • understand and apply key theories in entrepreneurship and small business management
  • understand and apply basic principles of international marketing strategy
  • be able to use literature in the context of reports and analysis of practical cases about entrepreneurs and small business operating internationally
  • contribute to the management and development of existing small businesses

Basic competences The student will have a basic understanding:

  • of the process of identification, development and commercialization of business ideas
  • of the process of starting up new businesses
  • of the process of entrepreneurship in existing firms
  • of issues relating to the road from the business opportunity to the launch of a viable products / services
  • of the process of foreign market entry and operations in foreign markets
  • of small business management and its challenges (finance, strategy, marketing, growth and development)
Valgfritt
The course is based on lectures, group work and self-study of relevant literature. It is emphasized that group work with cases will provide students greater insight into the key challenges associated with establishing a company, as well as management tasks in international businesses. Group work will be used for the students to acquire knowledge about key terms in the fields of international entrepreneurship.
