Introduction to Sustainable Production and Utilization of Bioresources 1

This course is one of the three mandatory modules of the introductory course of the MARBIO master programme on Sustainable Production and Utilisation of Marine Bioresources, The other two modules are organized by the partner universities (Hòlar university in Iceland and Gôteborg university in Sweden).

After completing the course, the student must have obtained:

Knowledge: After completion of the course, students will have:

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of the aquaculture industry globally

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Norwegian aquaculture industry, its environment and its sustainable development.

• Knowledge and understanding of food webs in the ocean

Skills: After completion of the course, the students will:•

Have the ability to select relevant scientific methods for research and developmental projects and discuss their successful aspects and shortcomings

• be able to formulate and a project, taking research ethics into account.

• be able to use outreach and communications tools to deliver information on scientific and social issues impacting the use and management of ocean food systems to specialists, stakeholders, the press, social media, and the general public.

• be able to present the knowledge acquired both orally and in writingGeneral competence: After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

• Competently discuss topics related to aquaculture techniques, salmon farming, global aquaculture and food from the ocean as well as sustainability

.• Can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in relation to the production and utilisation of marine bioresources

In addition to the semester fee and curriculum literature, it is assumed that the student has a laptop computer at his/her disposal.Other costs: Students must purchase their own laboratory coat for use in courses with laboratory exercises.Costs related to visits to partner universities must be expected.
Compulsory for students admitted to the MARBIO study program.
Online (recorded or streamed) and face to face lectures and discussions, seminars and field trip.
Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.
