Social Studies 1A - Social Studies as a School Subject, 5-10
The course provides an introduction to central themes and issues that include perspectives from both history, geography and social studies with relevance for teaching at middle and youth level. Didactic use of the local environment is central.
You will get to know the role and place of social studies in school, and get to study the curriculum in social studies. Social studies has particular responsibility for pupils developing digital citizenship. In this subject, we will practice the ability to think critically and source criticism, with particular emphasis on the digital. We also discuss the consequences of new technology, both for what happens in the classroom and otherwise in democracy.
KNOWLEDGE
The student
- Has knowledge of social studies content, working methods and mandate in school
- Has knowledge of the social studies curriculum for primary school, and its function and development
- Has knowledge of subject didactic theory and research in social studies in school, which is particularly linked to middle school and lower secondary school and the transition from primary school to lower secondary school and from lower secondary school to social studies in upper secondary education
- Has knowledge of geographical, historical and contemporary perspectives in social studies through selected issues and examples with relevance for middle school and lower secondary school
- Has knowledge of the social role of the media, the latest media developments including false and real information, as well as consequences for democracy
SKILLS
The student
- Can apply academic and didactic knowledge and skills in social studies education at middle and lower secondary levels
- Can use and critically assess various sources, teaching aids and learning resources on social studies topics adapted to middle and lower secondary levels
- Can discuss the consequences of new technology such as artificial intelligence in society and school
GENERAL COMPETENCE
The student
- Can apply research-based knowledge and theoretical concepts from the course in a reflective presentation
- Can exchange views and experiences with others, and through this contribute to the development of own and others' practice

Submissions: There are two work assignments (AK) during the semester.
- Compulsory participation in lessons, a minimum of 80 % attendance. Approved/not approved. Weighted 0/100 of final grade.
- Work assignments (AK): Two assignments will be given as work requirements during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved/not approved. Weighted 0/100 of final grade.
- Individual semester assignment (OP) Individual semester assignment. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 100/100 of final grade.
All aids permitted.
Exception: Generating text using Chat-GTP or other artificial intelligence and submitting it as one's own work, partly or fully, will be counted as cheating.
